Quick Tip: How to get your photos published in magazines
OK, so you’ve sent in your submission and you want to know what’s happening with your images.
An editor might consider a quick phone call after a couple of weeks reasonable, but most of them would prefer sending an email and you can bet none will like being harassed – that’s probably the quickest way to get this and any future submission thrown out.
If you intend to send your pictures elsewhere, you need to make that clear. You must not send the same work to competing titles at the same time. Magazines don’t necessarily check with you to see if it’s okay to use your work, they just assume that what you’ve sent is being exclusively offered to them. If you expect compensation, make it crystal clear on your submission. Some magazines pay, some don’t!
If two magazines use the same image at the same time, you’ll be unpopular.
Do your homework. Don’t send magazines shots identical to those they’ve already used either! Editors want something that’s both relevant and new. You get one good first impression; make it count!
Finally, remember that it takes time and practice. Be patient with it, and continue to submit your work. The wait time can be anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks or longer before you hear back and often several more months before appearing in print. If you aren’t finding success, ask a mentor to review some of your submissions to help you figure out how you can improve your work.
