Are You Shooting Video? If not, why not? – Gary Cole
My iPhone 6 shoots pretty decent video so I’m sure that most of you are using camera equipment that has video functionality. If not, you probably should be thinking about upgrading to a camera that does shoot high quality video.
I was at a photo studio yesterday where one of the photographers was reviewing on online menu that he had shot for a restaurant client. There were beautiful still life shots of some expertly prepared menu items. Then suddenly there was close up of champagne flowing into a glass, a group of people being seated at a table surrounded by food servers and then a wonderful close up of a chef delicately placing tiny fish eggs on top an entrée. I would post it here for you to see except the client hasn’t even seen it yet.
My point is that video is such a powerful medium with so much potential. And you don’t have to be in the video production business to get good use out of it. For example, post a short video of yourself working behind the camera on your website. It will give potential clients and models an insight into how you work, what you look like. If you work with models, get a short testimonial from them on what it’s like to work with you. Create a video specifically for a potential client, something that relates to their interests and needs. Experiment and see if shooting video doesn’t improve your ability to handle models in still photography situations.

Shooting video in glamour/nude situation is not easy. I watched the Playboy video group struggle with the problem for years—how to translate a centerfold or girl pictorial into video. With few exceptions, they seldom got it right. One of the reason is that they were attempting to create sustained 30-minute videos.
And that requires some creative scripting and a girl who has some acting ability. And, frankly, I just don’t think they were very good at it. I would begin by attempting to create a 2-3 minute video, just a seduction, a tease. And I wouldn’t worry about where or how to market it. If it’s good and you post it, it will go viral and going viral is not all bad when you are trying to market yourself. Use it as an attention getter, something to drive people to your website to look at more of your work.
