Early Retro Photography Workshop From 1961
Just in case you thought that you had stumbled onto something new as far photo seminars go, rest assured, you’re right! You have! And just because Shoot The Centerfold is a one-of-a-kind experience and no other workshop is comparable, we cannot claim to be the first ones in the industry. We are arguably the best but your father and his grandfather were probably snapping pictures at the seminars available to them long before the strobe lighting and Boogie Nights style shooting were in vogue. We stumbled upon this awesome and somewhat funny video where you see the instructor and his students getting down to some serious business based on one of the “official” photographers’ posing of a lovely model. Sure, the photography business changes with time and it looks like hair was much more important than makeup. But who cares about the makeup anyway when by the poolside … it’s all about the big hair that floats well in case of a brief afternoon skinny-dip.
The dress-code for the photographers seems clear: the red coats clearly stand for something. Perhaps they are the advanced lineup of photographers since they are not as eager to be on their knees and shooting? And who cannot notice the instructor’s jacket with official shoulder pad markings.
So, have we learned anything about this early seminar video? Yes. It is that we all need to adapt with time and remember the early creators who paved the road to our success. I am sure that one day in the future, our grand kids will watch our videos and say, “Dude! Check this video out! They’re using strobe lighting. That’s so old school.”
But before we get our hands on those transparent Aluminum Oxynitride power-packs and Dilithium crystals that make light-speed traveling available (great for location scouting and information is available at: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) we have our digital lighting guides available right here.
According to the British Pathe youtube account:
“M/S of a group of amateur photographers and Redcoats with cameras at a holiday camp; the Official Photographer removes the lens cover from one man’s camera. Commentator says the Camp Photographers advise holidaymakers on the best way to take their own personal photos.
M/S of their subject; a buxom blonde girl with highly back combed hair, wearing a white swimsuit and holding an inflatable beach ball above her head; the Official Photographer adjusts her pose and holds a light meter next to her. One of the photographers is brought forward to take a photo.
M/S as the Official Photographer adjusts the pose of another girl in shorts and a top; three of the men crouch down to photograph her.
M/S as two girls, one in a swimsuit, one in a bikini, pose beside a swimming pool; another Official Photographer adjusts their poses (they like doing this, don’t they?!) and holds a light meter beside them. M/S of a crowd of men and women with cameras; some receive instruction from the Officials. They snap away at the posing girls.

Jarmo and STC Fans,
Perhaps Mathew Brady did workshops as well. I know that we did a couple of weekend photo seminars at the Lake Geneva Playboy Club back in the mid ’70s. The quality of the teachers was very high (Pompeo Posar, Richard Fegley, Dwight Hooker). However, there wasn’t nearly the preparation and intensive thought that is given to each of the STC seminars. I have attended several other seminars over the years: Nikon, Polaroid, seminars by individual photographers. None of them came close to what happens at an STC seminar.
