Are You Styling and Lighting to Succeed?
For a glamour or fashion photographer who seeks success and publications, being obsessed with styling, hair & makeup in their shoots is the recipe for a successful pictorial. Ah, did I forgot to mention the lighting? No I did not. It’s a given that the lighting has to be supportive, magical and not just a switch of a light.
Lighting must accommodate the subject regardless if you are using natural light, a strobe or 12 strobes. The quality of light does not increase with multiple strobes. Use light wisely and adjust accordingly.
Lighting is just as important as wardrobe styling, assuming that your goal is getting your images published. Well styled images will always get the editors attention because they don’t get well styled pictorial submissions as much as they get submissions with no styling at all.
A good thing to remember is the demographic you are targeting. Aim the direction of your shoot keeping clients in mind since they do not care about your dreams as much they care about their profits and whether or not your pictorial has the potential to sell their publication. Try to create a picture story instead of just random single images.
The images below are a perfect example of styling/visual duo Luigi & Iango who shot to superstardom in a short time after their continuing team effort. Their rich understanding in styling, hair & makeup, wardrobe and taking the picture in the right light is a golden formula from which we can all learn a valuable lesson.
