Dual-Lens Camera System Rumored on iPhone 7 Plus
Thanks to advancements in technology especially in smart phones, there were an estimated 1 trillion photos shot in 2015. The quality of most of these shots is sorely lagging behind even the most consumer-oriented DSLR but with each new release, the quality gap is narrowing.
According to a post on macrumors.com, the iPhone 7 Plus will include a dual-lens camera system. The dual-lens system would take advantage of the technology created by LinX, an Isreali company acquired by Apple last year. The technology features smaller sensor sizes that have an improved sensitivity to light. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, it is expected the iPhone 7 Plus will feature a 2-3X optical zoom made possible by the dual-lens system. It is also Kuo’s opinion that the iPhone 7 Plus will be released with the option of a single-lens or dual-lens system.
The assumption is that with a dual-lens system, images will be clearer and brighter with less noise. The detail and color will be improved too. There is a potential for 3D mapping as well that would enable the user to change the focus point of the image after the fact as seen with the Lytro.
Obviously, with two sensors, the phone will need to have additional memory to handle the larger files. The rumor is the iPhone 7 Plus will have a 256GB option and up to 3GB of RAM.
While DSLRs are probably safe from becoming obsolete at this time, even with an upgrade of this magnitiude to smart phones, the camera manufacturers will need to continue to be vigilant in improving their products in order to keep the quality gap as wide as possible since the wider the gap, the more expensive the bridge.
