American Photo Magazine Ceases Publication

Posted on: 04-24-2015 Posted in: Photography

It seems that more and more magazines are stopping print publication and either moving to a digital only format or going out of business all together. American Photo is the latest casualty in the on-going struggle for print publications.

iPad--ad-290For years I have followed several publications and observed how their quality of paper has gone from beautiful glossy pages to a more affordable digital press that barely can hold the proper colors. This is a sign of the industry changing and it will do so whether we like it or not.

Personally, I do enjoy great layouts that can be seen on the printed page but the truth is the new generation and their viewing habits has made it no surprise that 60% of publications read are now done on mobile devices.

An off-topic example: on Tuesday, Google made a major update to its mobile search algorithm that now favors mobile-friendly websites and ranks these sites higher when users search for something from their phone and 60% of online traffic now comes from mobile. Digital publishing is the new medium and lets hope that American Photo remains popular and dear to our hearts with the new digital version.

lastissuemessageSubscribers were informed of the demise of the print version via a note attached to the latest issue of Popular Photography that they received in lieu of American Photo. The note, written by Popular Photography Editor-in-Chief Miriam Leuchter, explains that American Photo magazine “has discontinued publication effective with the March/April issue.” Leuchter goes on to explain that the coverage will transition to AmericanPhotoMag.com and that current subscribers will have their American Photo issues replaced with Popular Photography. If AP subscribers already have a subscription to Popular Photography, their subscription will be extended accordingly.

Both magazines are owned by the Bonnier Corporation who publishes over 30 specialty titles including Popular Science and Field & Stream. According to the media kits, Popular Photography has 3 ½ times the circulation and almost double the audience than American Photo did.

What does this mean for the photography and publishing world? Was this decision based on the difficulty to get advertisers for both magazines? Competing for ad revenue, resources, and content could make it difficult to justify both titles in the portfolio.

Obviously, we hate to see photography-centric magazines cease print operations since it’s simply less places to see new work by emerging artists and less places for us to submit our work for publication. However, with less available avenues for publication, we, as photographers, will need to step up our game in order to get noticed by the publications that do still exist.

This is a real shame, as I didn’t see it on the rack at that Newstand on Irving Park. But, those type of stores are a rarity. But, I did scour thru the place as examing all the magazine that are of interest to me. (I even bought a Nikki newspaper for a Japanese lady in the town over so as to give her something to read and just sift thru looking at all the advertisements) for $3.50 and all in Japanese. Maybe, she’ll save it for next winter to light their fireplace with it. Hence, I bought a few issues to weigh me down and thumb thru on the ride home. I do enjoy looking at those Thick small format British Vogue. Wonder if Playboy ever thought of downsizing in that fashion. Tons of attractive ladies to look at vs 2-3 a month. Course, it’s just a matter of time till Playboy pulls the plug in the publishing department – hence they had better wake up and make the magazine something I’d want to buy as compare 2-3 ladies to the thousands online. And I’d discard a whole bunch of the boring stories which seem like their for the guys overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan to stomach or tear out the page and wipe their ass with it. Hence, that kind of magazine ends up on the floor with all the piss on it or soaking it up. Those Playboy over their probably would prefer to keep their issues to themselves vs share that one copy with 2-3 gals in it.

Say you might call Hef up and tell him fly into Chicago and have lunch with Stan Lee. As the weather is cool and crisp in the mid-50’s. As, I was shooting the shit with him at the Grant Park Skate Park today with his wife. At the time I didn’t know who he was but it really wouldn’t of mattered either. But, Stan would probably be impressed Hef showed up and plugged in. As no doubt the guy probably slips in and out of the city from time to time with less fanfare as that Cardinal that just died and tied up traffic along Irving Park. Three helo’s above and probably not even one dash cam. You might even ask if they’ve ever pondered putting in a Bunny Store. I know where vacancy is at, but in a more refined area to capture some international sales. As I see so many young ladies who could be sporting some of those Bunny purses and I’ll bet a few of these guys would probably step inside to buy a few things as well. As, the Playboy store really wouldn’t compete with Victoria Secrets. And having been down to the corporate location last month. I can’t see guys going way over there to get a bunch of stuff. Even a museum at that location is hard to swallow. It just doesn’t say “high class or chic”. Course, since Playboy pulled chocks in Chicago in the public eye. It might make better sense to find a high rise in the center of town or in the building close to Boeing…. Across the river, as there’s a McDonalds on the corner and above it the Gizmo Fitness Center. A heavily traveled route and a super modern building which could have a plush/sexy look about it. Grant it. The view up there might suck. But, it is relatively close to the Metra Station.
Course, it’s a pity there’s not a Dairy Queen close by.

Ha just gotta wonder how many bunny’s came into Chicago and couldn’t find the place.

I might mention Playboy magazine at the newstand was on the bottom of the shelf at the newstand, probably haven’t gotten around to putting the issue in it’s respective place or even they see it not a big mover these days and those “Over 40” Magazines probably fetch healthier margins. Interestingly, I didn’t see “Score Magazine”, though it’s probably back there. I just didn’t look hard enough.
Though, I do have to wonder if the folks at Penthouse have ever pondered a move to Chicago as Boca Raton – just doesn’t say Penthouse to me and look at that rag. When Bob died, his kid and the dynamics of the magazine business and tons of competition really goose him or cooked his goose. Hence, Omni & Spin vanished or they might still be out there, probably under a stack of a ton of other current magazines which just aren’t selling. As imagine, getting Playboy on a SD card. Something which might have some room on it for every bodies selfies vs a cloud.

Course, if Apple is going to do away with the USB slot. One does have to wonder if anybody makes a wifi CF/SD card stand alone device. A sort of home cloud.
Ya know, it’d be great if these iPads had a reset button a it like the early Macs vs push a bunch of buttons (might help the paper clip business) and I’m sure everybody will love the wireless headphones.

And ya just gotta wonder when the justice department is going to step in Apples door and make them bust up the company. A bit like EBay & PayPal, course that Icahn splitting the company to create another stock.

If your in Chicago and get that last issue one can find it at the State St. Barns & Noble. I flipped thru it and could see why their pulling the plug. I instead bought, that BBC Classical Music magazine with CD. Where I might add one song on the disk is worth a flip and the rest are opera banter.
